Nikon’s D3X DSLR hits the scene in official fashion

After a quick outting in its own mag, Nikon has gone and gotten all officially official on the D3X. The big boy DSLR sports a bone-crushing 24.5-megapixel CMOS FX format sensor, full resolution shooting at 5 FPS, ISO from 100-1600 (expandable to 50-6400), TIFF, JPEG or NEF (RAW) file formats up to 138MB, and a newly updated EXPEED image processing system. The top-tier digicam won’t come super cheap, hitting shelves at ,999.95 — but if you need something like this, money probably isn’t much of an issue. The camera goes on sale this December, so you might want to get the piggy banks out. Check the gallery below for a full look at the magic.

Linux hits the iPhone!

We knew this day would eventually come, but somehow we’re still misting up a little — Linux has been ported to the iPhone and iPod touch. Dev Team member planetbeing is the mastermind in charge of bringing everyone’s favorite open-source OS to Apple’s handhelds, and while it’s a little rough around the edges (read: no touchscreen drivers, sound, or WiFi / cell radio support), it’s definitely the first step on the road to hacking nirvana. The team is hard at work, and it even sounds like they’re thinking about porting Android in the near future (!), so hit the read link to try it out and lend a hand if you can — or just head on past the break for a quick vid of the port in all its text-scrolling glory.

Nikon outs D3x in own Pro magazine

Uh, oops. Sorry Nikon but your D3x is now even less of a mystery. According to your own Pro magazine, the D3x will sport an FX-format, 24.5 megapixel sensor shooting 5fps at full resolution or 7fps at a reduced 10 megapixels. Nikon made a few other tweaks including an extended ISO 50-6400 range but the body design, AF, metering, and main functions remain the same as the D3. The only thing we need now is a price and confirmed release date. Back to you Nikon. One more shot detailing the features after the break, full details beyond the read link.

Rogers selling the BlackBerry Curve 8900? UPDATE: Yes indeed

Word on the street is that people have suddenly (and rather unexpectedly) started to be able to buy the Curve 8900 on Rogers for 9.99 on a three-year contract with support for the carrier’s Talkspot UMA service. Why this wasn’t heavily advertised leading up to the release, we don’t know — folks seem to be red-hot for this release — but at any rate, you should be able to stroll into your local shop in the next few days and pick this sucker up. That eternal question comes up yet again: Curve, Bold, or Storm?

Update: Game on — according to Boy Genius, the Curve is now listed in Rogers’ internal database and retail stores are starting to get stocks. So what’s it gonna be?

LG’s BD300 next in line for HD Netflix streaming

Remember when we heard that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was just one of many boxes that would support HD Netflix streaming over the next few months? Yeah, well we get the impression that the first week in December will be the go-live date for a smattering of new units. Just hours after hearing that Samsung’s BD-P2500 and BD-P2550 Blu-ray decks would be receiving a free update to enable high-def Netflix support, along comes a strikingly similar release from LG tipping us off on a strikingly similar update for its BD300. Said BD player, which has supported Watch Instantly from day one, will also support HD streaming after a gratis firmware upgrade in “early December.” Mmm, we definitely like where this is headed.

HD Netflix streaming coming to Samsung’s BD-P2500 / BD-P2550 Blu-ray players

Around this time last month, we learned that Netflix streaming would be making its way onto Samsung’s BD-P2500 / BD-P2550 Blu-ray players. Today, Sammy has dropped another related bombshell: HD Netflix streaming is just around the bend. Beginning the first week of December (which isn’t vague at all), owners of the aforementioned decks will be able to suck down a simple firmware update to enable high-def Netflix streaming. Enjoy the exclusivity, Xbox 360 — it all comes to an end soon.

Verizon announces Samsung Omnia for $249.99

If it’s a 5-megapixel cameraphone you’re looking for, there are decidedly cheaper entries on the market — but if only a 5-megapixel WinMo Professional set will do, the Omnia’s just about the best (read: only) deal you’ll find on an American carrier these days. The CDMA translation of the smartphone that Samsung’s been selling in other parts of the world for much of 2008 in GSM form carries over most of its key features, namely Windows Mobile 6.1 with TouchWiz, WiFi, DivX certification, the love-it-or-hate-it optical directional pad, and that beefy cam with flash and autofocus. It also nabs VZ Navigator support, stereo Bluetooth, a 3.2-inch 400 x 240 display, and 8GB of internal memory. Gives pause to that imminent Touch Pro purchase, doesn’t it? Look for it to be available for order this week — a full retail launch is expected come December 8 — for 9.99 after rebate on a two-year contract.

Blockbuster joins the movie set-top-box game with 2Wire MediaPoint player

We’ve rubbed our eyes four or five times now, but the factual heat remains: Blockbuster — of all companies — has decided to dive headfirst into the movie set-top-box arena. We wanted to believe the rumors were false, but sure enough, it has joined VUDU, Apple TV, Roku and the Xbox 360 in the highly competitive market place for your digital download dollars. For a “limited time,” the outfit will offer the 2Wire-built MediaPoint player for free with the “advance rental of 25 first-run movies, TV shows, foreign or classic films from Blockbuster On-Demand (previously Movielink) for .” After that, rentals are .99 to .99 apiece, and a Blockbuster subscription is not required. The unit itself measures 8- x 8- x 1-inch and includes two USB ports, an SD slot, Ethernet / WiFi and an HDMI port, and it should be available at the company’s website and in select retail stores very soon. So, are you interested in the à la carte approach?
