过去数年中，在来自新兴市场需求的助力下，手机市场一直以两位数的速度增长。但IDC指出，“随着新兴市场的逐渐成熟，其增长速度将呈减慢趋势。”IDC目前预测今年全球手机发售量的增长幅度为7.1%，明年的手机发售量同比出现负增长。
IDC的资深分析师瑞安·雷斯在一份声明中表示，诺基亚发表声明就是情况恶化的第一个迹象。诺基亚曾于今年11月发布预警称，消费者支出下降将可能波及手机市场，并下调了今年第四季度手机产业的发售预期。
但雷斯指出，真正引起对手机产业担忧的原因是来自为手机市场服务的芯片厂商发布的消极公告信息。他说：“由于市场前景增加了许多不确定因素，手机存货水平将比以往任何时候都更受到关注。”
IDC表示，只要手机还能用，消费者就会取消更换新手机的决定，直到有了更多可利用资金时，才有更换手机的可能。IDC预计手机低迷期持续时间不会超过2009年，还预计明年全球智能手机的发售量会增长8.9%。
